The Biosand Water Filter

For more infromation:
Vineyard Ministries Central Mexico and the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) have joined forces to disseminate water filters in Mexico, including Mazatlán. The Biosand Water Filter is inexpensive, sustainable, requires no chemicals or electric power, and the technology is easy to make with local materials. The filter eliminates over 96% of waterborne diseases, including parasites and amoebas, and produces up to 12 gallons of pure water an hour.
The Mazatlán task force is headed by Canadians Rod and Ingrid McCarroll, of the Friends Who Care Charities Ltd. They have set up two-day workshops to teach local communities how to build and operate the simple, self-sustaining filter. Working with Fred, they have already put the water purifying filters in each of the Vineyard churches and the Mazatlán orphanages, with later plans to install them in colonia schools and small churches.
As Rod McCarroll explains, “The technology is very inexpensive. A village can build the filter for around $40US. It will service a family of up to 20 and last for generations. If the family cannot afford that, sometimes we will donate the filter or they can pay $1 a month to purchase it. There are over 4000 units in Honduras and the Dominican Republic, 12,000 in Cambodia, 2,000 in Haiti and 700 in Cuba. We recently installed a filter at a Hogar de Niños that spent $70US a month for purified water, a huge sum for them. Now they have free, clean water for decades to come.”

A donation of 1,000 pesos will purchase two Biosand Water Filters, one for the purchaser and one to be donated to a needy family or community. Delivery is free of charge in Mazatlán.
