| In
1565, the Spanish discovered this tranquil little village and
used it to work in the mines during early conquest days. But
after the Spanish left, and the mines closed down, Copala almost
disappeared from the map until a former Mexican President remembered
that his mother was born there and took steps to revive the
town. The burros wandering down cobblestone streets, the white
houses with red roofs and the amazing banana-coconut pie are
a few of the things that make Copala such an attraction. |

Just a half hour drive east of Concordia, Copala seems like
it was frozen in time. Small enough to tour on foot, Copala
is an enchanting mountain town. Roam the streets with the farm
animals, enjoy the lush mountain view and fresh country air,
tour the old San Jose church and wander down into the old mines...
To get to Copala from Mazatlán, take Federal Highway 15, 25
km southeast of Mazatlán until you reach Villa Union. From there,
take the detour connecting to Hwy 40 and continue in that direction,
past Concordia, until you reach your destination. |
