Hola, amigos. Mazatlán is
very well known for its beautiful beaches. All along the beach you can find great spots for Surf fishing, starting at Olas Altas, all the way to Cerritos beach, and farther if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle.
Every day at sunrise and at sunset it is very common to see people fishing on the beach, some just hand-line fishing and others with rods and spinning reels. I prefer the area between La Marina Tennis Club Condos and Playa Bruja Restaurant. Just lately Rooster fish, Jack Crevalle, Snapper, Corvina, Snook have been caught. Also it is common to catch Trigger fish, Cabrilla and Salt water Catfish—this last one you must be careful because it has toxic spines that will hurt you.
The most commonly used bait is shrimp, then squid or strips of mullet. Those who know how to catch sand crabs on the beach prefer them for bait, very good for catching snappers.
Lures like poppers, buck tail jigs and ranger lures are used to catch the aggressive Rooster fish, Snook and Corvina but the very best bait is live mullet. Some times you can see fishermen catching their own bait at the beach with a casting net and believe me, they always catch the biggest ones. |
catch on the beach it is not only edible, but it is also very healthy and delicious—the very best you can eat in Mazatlán. Eat fish fried, with butter garlic, BBQ, make Ceviche or use your own family’s secret recipe. It is a MUST DO activity. It is very relaxing; you are out there enjoying nature, the quiet atmosphere, pure fresh air, the great view –plus the excitement of fishing. I am always trying to encourage everyone to do this and believe me if you don’t catch fish that morning you won’t regret it. You will still have a great time. If you check the Pacific Pearl´s tide charts, or visit this website: http://www.tablademareas.com/sinaloa you can see the ocean tides in Mazatlán to plan your fishing day.
Remember that you must be very careful if you are fishing while standing on rocks such as on Valentino’s point, Fiesta Inn water breaker, El Faro Hotel point and Cerritos. Not only are the rocks very slippery, but they are sharp like razor blades and are full of sea urchins. I strongly recommend staying on the sandy beaches and avoid many risks. Good luck.
