November’s a busy month for the arts
By Jackie Peterson
There’s a lot going on in the way of arts events in Mazatlán this month,  some of it free and some requiring tickets.  Just take a look at this broad array:

* The Mazatlán Cultural Festival starts on the first day of the month, with a gala performance of Mozart’s “Requiem” in the Angela Peralta Theater, topped off by a callejoneada (street procession) through Old Mazatlán to visit the traditional altars to the dead in various locations. See the complete calendar for the two-month festival in these pages.

* Danzon Thursdays continue starting on the 6th at Zaragoza Park (corner of Cinco de Mayo and Calle Zaragoza) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. People of every age are welcome to come and dance or watch the dancing at this free event.

* Artwalk — For the second year in a row, Artwalk will be offering the public a free monthly tour of artists’ galleries and workshops in the Centro Historico. This winter it will take place from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. every first Friday starting Nov. 7 and ending in May of 2009. All told there are 21 sites and 35 artists participating.

* Opera: Two performances of “Barber of Seville” are slated for the stage of the Angela Peralta Theater at 8:00 p.m. on the 21st and 22nd. This is a separate production not related to the Mazatlán Cultural Festival and not part of its season ticket offer (which includes 9 of the 13 events on the ticketed schedule). Highlights will be the appearance of two extremely talented hometown stars: Tenor Adan Perez in the title role and conductor Enrique Patron de Rueda, leading the Mazatlán Symphonette.

* Mazatlán Basilica’s 50th anniversary celebration as a cathedral. It includes a week’s worth of religious events topped by a concert in the cathedral with its angelic acoustics. Check at the cathedral office for tickets.

* Carnaval — Mazatlán’s biggest citywide party won’t come up again until Feb. 19-24, 2009, but already the event has been publicized in a Guadalajara parade and all candidates for royal office (Queen of Carnaval, King of Joy, Child Queen) have been selected and introduced. So don’t be surprised to see spontaneous street parades and rallies as each candidate’s team gets out and about to drum up support for their favorites.

Now then, back to the Mazatlán Cultural Festival (Nov. 1-Dec. 20). Here is the complete calendar of events for Mazfest. There’s something to please every taste, but keep in mind that the Pacific Pearl cannot be responsible for last-minute changes. The best source of information is the Angela Peralta Theater box office, 982-4446, ext. 104. Somebody is there in the mornings (9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) who speaks English.
