Mexico has a Bobsled Team. No joke. They are so hot they are melting the ice at very Bobsled track they have an opportunity to try. They were recently in Mazatlán for a press conference given by their new promoters, The Inn at Mazatlán. The team captain, Roberto Tamés Perea has been interested in the sport since he was a kid in Guadalajara and received his first go cart. He has worked very hard to learn the necessary precision required to be an outstanding bobsled pilot. He has directed the team since it’s beginning in the early 80’s. The team competed in the Olympics in Calgary, Canada in ’88, Albertville, France in ‘92, and Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002. Their best finish in the Olympics was 28th. However, were second in the America Cup in 2004, they were second in the Russian 4-M competition in 2005, and third in the Challenge cup of 2006, among other accomplishments. The team practices at a push track in Guadalajara every day. Roberto says there they can practice their starts, which is a huge part of the sport. They travel, as possible, to actual Bobsled tracks but that costs a lot of |
money. Their long term
goal is to qualify for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. But first they
hope to get the all of the pilots to pilot school in Austria and increase
the number of bobsled pilots available in Mexico. Arturo Piña, of the
Inn at Mazatlán, says he wants to help get the team a new bobsled by the
2010 Olympics and is accepting donations for that via their General Manager,
Humberto Aviles. He says the Mexican Government doesn’t support winter
sports, so The Inn at Mazatlán is helping the team with lodging, equipment
and expenses needed to travel, get proper training and attend competitions
as possible. It is an expensive sport. The team needs all the help they
can get. Piña feels that if they had the right equipment and training,
they could win the Olympics. Sergio Palacios from the Hispanic Chamber
of Commerce in Utah is helping the team by connecting them with Hispanic
companies in Utah, for support, places to stay, and papers while training
in Salt Lake City. If you are interested to get more information about
the team, or would like to help, their website is: www.bobsledmexico.com.
