LIGHT OPERA AND AN EVENING OF MUSIC TOP THE JUNE MARQUEE
By Jackie Peterson

The highlights on Mazatlán’s performing arts calendar for June come up right at the beginning of the month. It starts with a zarzuela (Spanish light opera) called “Luisa Fernanda” that brings the Sinaloa Symphony Orchestra of the Arts to the pit of the Angela Peralta Theater and the Opera Chorus of Sinaloa to its stage. The performance begins at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, June 1. Ticket prices had not been announced at the time the Pacific Pearl went to press, but whatever they are, they’ll be worth it for this lighthearted production under the baton of guest director Sergio Martinez. Then the following Saturday, June 7, marks the sixth annual Dia de Música, when every kind of melodic style reverberates throughout the Centro Historico and most of that area is turned into a pedestrian walkway. This year, as in previous editions, five key sites throughout the historic center will be offering as many musical styles simultaneously. You can meander from the main stage at the Plazuela Machado to a rock site, a salsa site, a spot dedicated to guitar-playing troubadours or to a corner dedicated to Mexican golden oldies, mariachis and flamenco. No tickets are needed. Just show up in Old Mazatlán from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight to enjoy the free entertainment,

courtesy of the Project Centro Historico, municipal and state cultural arms and local businesses. Programs will be handed out at all the locations. The rest of the June calendar is loaded with recitals by the various schools within the Municipal Center for the Arts. These performances are generally free, and sometimes can be entertaining for people other than the loving parents of the participants. Please note that this calendar is subject to change.
