NEW SEAT BELT LAW, NEW SMOKING BAN, SERIOUSLY!

By Lisa Lankins

FBeginning the 26th of Feb- ruary, The Transit Police began giving all drivers tickets for not properly using their seat belts. The program is called Cero Tolerancia (Zero Tolerance). They will also have no tolerance for speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, alcohol in the auto, polarized (darkened) windows, or motorcycles weaving in and out of traffic. Police will be carrying alcohol meters for use in accident investigations. They even state they will require Pulmonias to insist passengers use seatbelts, and it is required now that every motorcycle rider and passenger wear a helmet. What does proper use of seatbelts mean? It means that the occupants of the vehicle have the seat belt utilized so that they are protected in the case of a car

accident. The upper belt must pass over the left clavicle and over to the hip. The lower strap must pass over the hips, and not the abdomen to avoid organ damage in a collision. It is recommended that children under 12 years travel in the back seat and they use a child’s seat or sit on pillows to position the seat belt correctly on their bodies. Pregnant women should have the lower strap under their bellies, and the upper strap over. Babies need to be in car seats properly positioned and stabilized with the seat belt. Very soon, approximately six months, there will be a law infect in all of Mexico that will ban smoking in all public spaces such as bars, restaurants, and offices. The fines will run from 5,000 pesos to 50,000 pesos and possible jail time for repeat offenders.
