April promises a wide
array of experiences, from the ethereal beauty of the dance to the howls
of Allen Ginsberg and the beatniks. To begin with the most unique, the
Mazatlán Historical Society is putting together a special event marking
the visit 50 years ago of Ginsberg, Kerouac, Creeley and company to our
shores. It is set for the weekend of April 26-27 and includes conferences
and the placing of a plaque marking Ginsberg’s sojourn here in the late
1950s. The capper will be a bilingual session of poetry and jazz reminiscent
of those that used to take place in a San Francisco jazz bar called The
Cellar. This time, though, the recitals and riffs will be heard at the
Mazatlán Art Museum at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26. Incidentally,
the Spanish word for “Howl!” is “Aullido!” and it sounds like a shriek
in either language. Moving on, this is always the month when various international
dance companies gather to participate in the annual Jose Limon Dance Festival.
It runs April 15-27 at the Angela Peralta Theater, with one public performance
in the Plazuela Republica. Dance troupes from as diverse places as Sweden
and South Korea are among those scheduled to appear. For specific times
and dates on everything mentioned, please check the calendar below. And
don’t forget the First Friday Artwalk on April 4, when visitors are welcome
to poke into more than a dozen artists’ studios in the Historic Center.
