A step forward in the world of garbage disposal was taken recently by
Patricia Coppel who has rounded up a committee of 10 prominent local women
and started a campaign called “Separado no es basura” to promote recycling.
According to Coppel, Mazatlán produces 600 tons of garbage every day,
60 percent of which could be recycled and reused. To this end the group
has established Mazatlán’s first recycling center in the parking lot at
Gigante supermarket. The committee will use funds raised by the recycling
of the collected items for maintenance of the first center and establishment
of a second one in another part of the city. In addition to taking the
campaign to local schools, it’s also planned to promote the idea in Los
Cabos. Open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 2pm, the following is a list
of accept-able materials which can be

dropped off at the center:
Paper & Cardboard (Clean, dry & bound) Newspaper Paper: Magazines, envelopes,
flyers, notebooks, sheets Cardboard: cookie boxes, cereal boxes, medicine
boxes Metals (rinsed, dried and crushed in clear or grocery plastic bags)
Aluminum cans of any type (beer, soda, juice) Tin cans (such as dog food
cans, canned vegetables, etc.) Plastics (drained, rinsed, dried and crushed
in clear or grocery plastic bags) Bottles or containers: water, juice,
soda, milk, mayonnaise, vinegar, oil, yogurt, butter, etc. Bottles: shampoo,
cleaners (like Pinol & Clorox), liquid detergent, softeners, plastic lids
Plastic Bags The recycling center will NOT accept: Materials containing
food waste Wood chipboard Rags or synthetic material Styrofoam, insulation,
