TWO SINGULAR EVENTS STAND OUT ON NOVEMBER CALENDAR

By Jackie Peterson

Two events that are slightly out of the ordinary are posted on the Mazatlán Cultural Festival’s November calendar. Both will benefit worthy causes in the community. The first one, set for 8pm on Nov. 21, is the Pasarela Pacifico, a haute-couture fashion show in which Mexico’s top designers will give the audience a preview of what will be in vogue for spring, 2008.  This is a two-part evening, for the clothing will be modeled on the stage of the Angela Peralta Theater, while a jewelry fashion show will take place later at the Hotel Emerald Bay. Then the whole thing will wrap up with a gala dinner at that same hotel. Creations by Hector Terrones, Macario Jimenez, Carlo Demichelis, Jesus Ibarra and Bertholdo will be worn by international models under the direction of Beatriz Calles, well-known fashion producer and coordinator.  Tickets for this extraordinary evening cost 1,000 pesos, and the proceeds will be divided 50-50 between the Orfanatorio Mazatlán and the city’s Banco de Ropa (clothes bank).  Further information can be obtained by calling 986-0624. Then at 8:30pm on Nov. 28, yet another unusual

evening is planned as a benefit for the Proyecto Centro Historico. It’s a Tribute to Queen, the British rock band, and it will take place in the ruins of an abandoned textile factory in Villa Union, the town some 10 miles south of Mazatlán. Performing will be the Sinaloa Symphony Orchestra of the Arts, a rock band called the Aleph Liverpool Group and the chorus of the Sinaloa Opera, all told more than 100 participants under the baton of maestro Gordon Campbell. Shuttle buses will take concert goers in Mazatlán to and from the site, which local motorists will know as being located on the same street as Cuchupeta’s restaurant. There will be reserved and general admission seating and no-host bars where the audience can obtain their favorite beverages. Tickets for the event, available at the Angela Peralta Theater box office, cost 250 pesos for numbered seats, 150 pesos general admission, and 100 pesos for transportation.  The bus routes will be from Hotel Emerald Bay to Hotel Emporio; from Hotel Plaza Marina to Hotel Pelayo; from Gigante, and from the Mazatlán Woman statue at Olas Altas. Further information is available at 985-4980.
