THIS IS A GREAT SEASON FOR THE THEATERGOERS
By Jackie Peterson

If you enjoy going to a good show at Mazatlán’s historic Angela Peralta Theater, you’re in town at the right time. November and December are, for the performing arts, the most crowded months of the year, for the Sinaloa Arts Fair is still in progress at the beginning of November and the Mazatlán Cultural Festival is barely getting under way. Not only are there events to look forward to in the theater, there are also free shows of various kinds in the downtown streets and plazas. The callejoneada (ca-yeh-ho-ney-AHda) or street procession marking the Day of the Dead kicks off the proceedings at 7:00 p.m. the evening of Thursday, Nov. 1. This traditional public walkabout in the Centro Historico leads the participants to various altars set up for the dear departed. And speaking of the departed, this year’s Mazatlán Cultural Festival has been dedicated to the late Don Julio Berdegué, local hotelier-developer who died in April of 2007. An ardent supporter of the arts, he is being honored for his generosity in providing hundreds of rooms and meals to performers both in the Cultural Festival and during many editions of Carnaval Mazatlán.  Here is the calendar of events both within and outside of the theater during the Sinaloa Arts Fair (S) and the Mazatlán Cultural Festival (M). For events that require tickets, you can obtain them at the box office to the right of the theater entrance. And remember, it’s always a good idea to check the website: www.culturamazatlan.com.mx to verify performance times and dates as well as new events that may pop onto the schedule after the Pearl’s press time.
