ARTS TAKE A BREATHER AFTER CARNAVAL

By Jackie Peterson

Although the March performing arts calendar is usually on the lightside, there are a couple of events of interest you might want to mark on your calendar. And you can always check on line to see if other events have come up after the Pearl’s deadline. That handy-dandy reference point is:  www.culturamazatlan.com, and if you click on the flag in the upper right-hand corner, you’ll find the information translated into English. As for what we know at deadline, the Angela Peralta Theater will be honored with a belated birthday celebration of its own. The very first time the theater opened its doors was on Feb. 14, 1874. Because of conflicts with Carnaval activities, it won’t be until early this month that recognition of that fact will be paid with a dance performance titled “The Mexican Nightingale.” A choreography created by Zoila Fernandez of the Professional School of Contemporary Dance and Margarita Naranjo of the School of Ballet, both schools within the Municipal Center for the Arts, traces the story of Angela Peralta’s tragic visit to this port and her death while here from yellow fever. Then, of course, there’s the always

popular flamenco show put on by Miura Flamenco Expressions. Lucero and her troupe of students and professional practitioners of the Spanish gypsy style of song and dance provide this bouncy show. Because of audience demand, two performances are scheduled. Last but not least, there’s Feliart, a book fair that will take over the Plazuela Machado in the Historic Center of Mazatlán for nine days midmonth. While the books sold at the many stands crowding into the square are always in Spanish, some of the booths also offer book-related items, souvenirs, decorative objects. The square is always full of people in the afternoons/evenings and the atmosphere is lively as people gather to hear authors read from their works (and sell books). The Machado is always worth a visit during Feliart whether you speak Spanish or not. Here’s the calendar so far as we know it at this time: MARCH Wed. Mar. 7: “The Mexican Nightingale,” a history of the famous soprano in dance 8pm, Angela Peralta Theater Sat. Mar. 10: Muira Expression Flamenco 5:00 & 8:00pm, Angela Peralta Theater Mar. 16-24: Feliart Book & Arts Fair, Daily, Plazuela Machado
