CULTURAL FESTIVAL BRINGS A TREASURY OF PERFORMING ARTS TO TOWN
By Jackie Peterson

The Mazatlán Cultural Festival was born in the fall of 1993 out of a need to bring the performing arts to the stage of the newly restored, historic Angela Peralta Theater. Before then, there really hadn’t been a venue suitable for the kind of performances envisioned by the municipality. To be sure, under the sponsorship of then Gov. Francisco Labastida, there was a Sinaloa Arts Festival that lasted two weeks in late October. When artists booked for the festival came to Mazatlán, they had to play on a ruined stage in the open-air shell that was the remains of the old theater. Labastida’s successor cut the arts budget to the bone, leaving a recently restored theater with nothing to put on its gleaming new stage. That’s how the Mazatlán Cultural Festival got its start, and over the years it has grown in scope to what Mazatlán audiences enjoy now: a kaleidoscope of music, opera, dance, drama, the plastic arts — all the happenings befitting the jewel of a theater you see today along with the free outdoor performances that always have been a festival tradition. Here is the complete schedule of events for Mazfest 2006 that you can clip and save. Please remember that this calendar is subject to slight changes and adjustments, and that the opening performance, Mozart’s “Requiem,” already has taken place and was included in the 1,520-peso season ticket.
