CONDUCTOR STEPS OFF THE PODIUM AND INTO THE PIT
By Jackie Peterson

AHere’s an interesting little sideline on the performance of “Carmen” two Sundays ago: One of the French horn players had a last-minute domestic emergency and so Gordon Campbell, Ohio-born director of the orchestra, stepped into the pit and played in her stead until she arrived in time for Act Two. Since his Sinaloa Symphony Orchestra was under the baton of guest conductor Enrique Patron de Rueda for the opera, Campbell was not on call to take his usual spot on the podium. Incidentally, Campbell and the orchestra travel to Mexico City June 3 to collect an award as the Best Orchestra in all of Mexico. In proud attendance at the ceremony will be Sinaloa Gov. Jesus Aguilar Padilla, with whose financial support the orchestra, founded under previous Gov. Juan S. Millan, continues to flourish. Congratulations go to Campbell and his 68 musicians, as well as to Gov. Aguilar for keeping the orchestra afloat. Since the orchestra frequently performs in Mazatlán, local audiences are beneficiaries of this top-quality musical nugget. As to forthcoming events at the Angela Peralta Theater during June, it’s the end of the school year for students at the Municipal Center for the Arts. That usually means recitals of one sort or another, and they mostly occur this month and next. However, there are a couple of performances of more general interest slated for this month at the theater. This was the

information available at press time. Last-minute changes and additions to the calendar below may come up later, so it’s always a good idea to check posters outside the theater when visiting the Historic Center of Mazatlán, or to consult the website: www.culturamazatlan.com.mx JUNE 2006 Thurs, 1st: Música y Raíces 2006, an Evening of Music and Song Time: 8:00pm Place: Angela Peralta Theater Ticket prices: To be confirmed “Música y raíces” (Music & Roots) returns to Mazatlán with the outstanding voices of soprano Florencia Tinoco and tenor Gabriel Gonzalez, who together with the Chamber Orchestra of the Cuauhtemoc Brewery bring a repertory that covers many well-loved semi-classical pieces.
