On the local performing arts scene, June is a month of recitals. Every young
individual and group at the Municipal Center for the Arts has to show off
for their parents at least once a year, right? But concertgoers will find
a few extraordinary events going on amid the more routine student show-and-tell.
The biggest happenings are slated for June 10 and 11. First, at 8:00 p.m.
on the evening of June 10, the Sinaloa Symphony Orchestra — now 71 musicians
strong — will fill the Mazatlan Cathedral with the sounds of Brahms Symphony
No. 4. This concert honors the fact that they’re switching on the lights
to illuminate some of the buildings in Mazatlan’s historic center, and the
cathedral is one of them. It was uncertain at press time who would actually
flick the switch: the mayor, the governor or the Secretary of Tourism from
Mexico City. The concert and ceremony are open to the public. Tickets for
preferred concert seating in the cathedral are 100 pesos each and can be
obtained at the Angela Peralta Theater box office. Seating on the side aisles
and standing room is free. Most likely the lighting ceremony will take place
after the concert when it is good and dark. Next night, the 11th, the third
annual Fiesta of Music takes place starting at 7:00 p.m. This is when different
types of music by as many different kinds of musicians and groups will play
at five sites around the historic center. There’ll be classical, jazz, trova
(usually a guitarist who sings poetic ballads in Spanish), mariachi, show
tunes, rock, salsa, Mexican popular and Sinaloa banda —and more — at this
free, informal one-day musical party. And it is rumored that the symphony
orchestra will play some Beatles tunes in the Plazuela Machado. The notes

float amid the
twinkling new lighting effects in the area for four hours except for the
Machado, which keeps on playing until midnight. As usual, this month’s arts
calendar is not locked in stone. Everything is subject to changes and additions,
so if any event requiring tickets interests you, you can call the Angela
Peralta box office at 982-4446 or check the website at www.teatroangelaperalta.com
for the latest word. Here’s the calendar for June at the Angela Peralta
Theater. All performances are customarily set for 8:00 p.m. unless otherwise
specified. Information and tickets can be obtained at the box office to
