ART CALENDAR FOR JANUARY
By Jackie Peterson

The local arts scene takes a bit of a breather after the holidays, so January is traditionally a light month. Then too, this year Mazatlán is gearing up for two simultaneous international events taking place here the first week of February: the Caribbean Series baseball tournament and Carnaval Mazatlán 2005. One item of more than passing interest is already open to the public at the Mazatlán Archaeological Museum, on Calle Sixto Osuna half a block east of Olas Altas. A huge collection of prehispanic “sellos” or stamps — the kind that were used by the indigenous peoples of Mexico to print designs into cloth and sometimes as markers or signatures — are on loan from the archaeology museum in Guanajuato from now through March 15. The exhibition is visitor-friendly with explanatory folders in English as well as Spanish. The museum,

a federal government entity, is open daily. Here is what we received from the Angela Peralta Theater at press time. There undoubtedly will be corrections and additions to this calendar for the month of January 2005, so we suggest you check with the theater before you make your plans. The box office is to the right of the theater entrance on the pedestrian walkway near the corner of Calle Constitucion and Carnaval, telephone 982-4446 and 4447.
