Throughout recorded history humans have adorned themselves with some form
of jewelry, whether it be a sacred amulet of whale’s teeth, an ivory bone,
brilliant stones or the precious metals of gold and silver. These personal
adornments reflect our characters and our cultures. From ancient times the
creative artisans who design and manufacture quality ornaments have been
held in high regard. When Cuauhtemoc Lobera decided to open a jewelry store
in Mazatlán, he kept that thought in mind. He named his shop Cielito Lindo,
which literally translates as “beautiful little sky,” though the phrase
is used colloquially as an endearment. Originally from Mexico City, Sr.
Lobera began life in the jewelry business as a silver distributor, eventually
buying an opal mine in Magdelena, Jalisco thereby adding opals to his inventory.
It was at this point that the idea of having his own store took shape and
in the year 2000 his first Cielito Lindo store opened for business in the
heart of the Golden Zone on Av. Playa Gaviotas. Within the next five years,
six more stores, including a jewelry design workshop, were added to the
original Cielito Lindo. The jewelry workshop, located just west and across
the street from Jungle Juice, is the origin of the many beautiful, imaginative
pieces displayed in Sr. Lobera´s stores. Six creative designers work in
white gold, yellow gold and silver creating one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces
from their own imaginations or client specifications. All original designed
gold jewelry comes with a certificate of authenticity. Silver used at the
workshop comes from the famous Mexican Taxco silver mines and bears the
marks of “.925” and “Mexico,” which indicate genuine silver. The country
of Mexico is rich in semi-precious stones. Here you |

will find turquoise,
malachite, onyx, tiger eye, amethyst, jade, agate, the yellow, smoke and
blue topaz, quartz, jade and 28 different colors of opal. Of the 28 opals,
the brilliant orange or red Mexican Fire Opal is the most dramatic and sought
after. The designers at Cielito Lindo have an affinity with the fire opal,
creating pendants, earrings and broaches that are unique and stand out in
a crowd. Along with Mexican stones, they also work with tanzanite, emeralds,
sapphires and rubies. The discerning buyer can chose a loose stone for setting
at a later date, or work with the designers to fashion a personal adornment.
Unusual in the Cielito Lindo inventory of stones is the Charles & Colvard
Moissanite, a man-made diamond-like stone that has more luster, fire and
brilliance than the diamond or cubic zirconia. Moissanite is named after
Dr. Henri Moissan, an American scientist who discovered brilliant particles
of silicon carbide in a meteorite found in the Arizona desert. Charles &
Colvard developed a synthetic process for reproducing the crystals, introducing
another gem into the jewelry world. The seven Cielito Lindo stores are a
haven for those of us who enjoy expressing ourselves in personal adornments.
From the simple silver chain, to the soft turquoise earrings, to the magnificent
fire opal pendant, the displays are co-ordinated and well lit. Prices are
very reasonable, though you are always welcome to negotiate with the salespeople.
If you are passing by the Cielto Lindo store on the corner of Playa Gaviotas
and Boca del Mar, take a minute to stop in and look at the hand-crafted
gold and tanzanite seahorse broach and the Mexican Fire Opal pendant designed
in a sun pattern. They are a jewelry lover´s dream and a hallmark of quality.
