MAZATLAN FOOD BANK HOLDS FUNDRAISER
By Maureen Dietrich

HNot many Mazatlecans are aware that a Food Bank (Banco de Alimentos) opened its doors in Mazatlán in November, 2003. Since that day, the non-profit organization has grown to provide bi-weekly food subsidies for 1,757 people in 14 colonias. The Food Bank also distributes groceries to local charities, including the Old Folks´ Home, Hogar Damasco and Centro Comunitario Familia, adding a further 993 food packages to their weekly roster. This remarkable accomplishment is due, almost in its entirety, to donations from local commercial enterprises and the zeal of the young Tec de Monterrey students and graduates who volunteer their time, energy and efforts in organizing and distributing food packages under the guidance of a Board of Directors. In October, the Mazatlán Food Bank will hold a community drive for grocery donations and funds, which they have called the classroom during the period Oct. 1-15. On October 15, university students will canvass house-to-house asking for a grocery item to be donated to the Food Bank, and will man the malls “Hambreton.” The campaign will

begin with asking primary school children to bring a food item to and supermarkets with donation boxes. The main Hambreton event, however, will take place at Salon Bacanora (across from Gigante) on October 16th. Billed as a celebration, there will be music, cheerleaders, dancers and other entertainment, along with a ceremony recognizing the Food Bank´s sponsors which include Lala, Sigma Alimentos, Tonicol, Coca Cola, Fiestaland, Anglo Moderno School and Tec de Monterrey, among others. The doors are open from 9:00am-9:00pm. Admission is free, but it is hoped visitors will donate a food item or monetary contribution at the door. The objective of the fund-raising event is to raise 100,000 pesos and 50 tons of food. According to Karla Monárrez, the young Business Administration graduate who now manages the Food Bank, they are always short of milk, sugar, rice, baby food, water and cooking oil. If you are unable to attend the Hambreton event on October 16th and would like to donate to the Food Bank, they are located at Av. Gutiérrez Nájera 404, telephone 981-2457, open 9:00am to 4:00pm.
