Activity on Mazatlán’s
per forming and plastic arts scene has begun to wind down after a very
eventful winter season. As far as English-speaking visitors go, the pickings
at the historic Angela Peralta Theater in Old Mazatlán are quite slim
in May. Some of the performances scheduled for the theater this month
are Spanish-language plays. But there are a couple of exceptions, as can
be seen on the theater’s May schedule. And remember, you can check for
updates in both Spanish and English on the website: www.teatroangelaperalta.com
Here’s what’s on the theater’s May menu at Pacific Pearl press time: Thursday
1, 7:00 & 9:30pm: Play (in Spanish): “Cartas de Amor” with Ignacio López
Tarso and Carmen Montejo Tuesday 6, 8:00pm: Play (in Spanish): “El Astrólogo
Fingido” by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, with the student group TATUAS
Friday 9, 8:00pm: Inauguration of an exhibition of art works by Dulce
Maria Castañeda Rose in the theater’s upstairs gallery Friday 16, Saturday
17 & Sunday 18, 8:00pm: World premiere: “At a Given Place” performed by
the Delfos Contemporary Dance Company In other arts news, a Sinaloa photographer

exhibiting 32 of his photos of La Labor, a village once part of a mighty
hacienda in the municipality of San Ignacio. The inauguration is at 8:00pm
May 8 in the museum’s cafeteria and the show will continue through the
month. Then at 8:00pm on May 25 in the gallery reserved for temporary
exhibits, art works by Aurora Quiñones go on display to continue into
June. Admission to the museum, which also has a notable permanent collection
of works by Sinaloa artists, is 10 pesos, and hours are 10:00am to 2:00pm,
and again from 4:00pm to 7:00pm daily except Mondays. The museum is on
Calle Sixto Osuna, half a block behind Olas Altas. Across the street at
Calle Sixto Osuna no. 76, “The Abstract Years,” an exhibition of early
works by Mazatlan’s most famous living artist, Antonio Lopez Saenz, continues
to occupy the main salon in the Mazatlán Archaeology Museum during the
month of May. The Mazatlán Archaeology Museum, which permanently houses
a noteworthy display of artifacts from the indigenous peoples who inhabited
Sinaloa before the Spaniards arrived, is open daily, and its hours are
Mondays to Saturdays from 9:00am to 6:00pm, Sundays from 10:00am to 3:00pm.
