MARCH ART CALENDAR FILLS UP
By Jackie Peterson
There’ll be a whole lot of strumming going on. Difocur, the cultural arm of government for the state of Sinaloa, has decided after two years in Culiacán to move its International Guitar Festival to Mazatlán, and it will take place between March 10 and 15 in the Angela Peralta Theater and the Municipal Center for the Arts next door. One facet of the event will encompass the Mexican National Classical Guitar Contest whose participants have included the most outstanding guitarists in the country. Obligatory pieces the contestants must play include “Capricho Arabe” by Tarrega, “Variations” by Fernando Sor, and at least one composition by Johann Sebas-tian Bach. In addition to playing before the judges, it is expected that festival participants will teach some master classes to students at Mazatlán’s Municipal Center for the Arts. Grand finale for the festival will be the appearance on March 15 of the American guitarist Martha Master, who will play in concert with the Sinaloa Orchestra of the Arts, under the baton of Gordon Campbell. March performances open to the public in the Angela Peralta Theater, at 8 p.m. unless otherwise noted, line up below. Since these are always subject to change without notice, it’s best to verify at the box office, Calle Carnaval near onstitucion, in Old Mazatlán. Tels: 982-4446 or 4447. Or check the website: www.teatroangelaperalta.com. In other arts news, the prize-winning paintings in the Antonio Lopez Saenz competition for Sinaloa painters which runs in conjunction with Carn-aval will be on temporary display at the Maz-atlan Art Museum on Calle Sixto Osuna, half a block behind Olas Altas. And across the street at Sixto Osuna no 76, “The Abstract Years,” an exhibition of early works by Mazatlan’s most famous living artist, Antonio Lopez Saenz, will remain on view throughout the month – except during Carnaval, when most everything closes except the party.
