AMERICANS GATHER TO SHARE THEIR GRIEF
By Jackie Peterson

It was a somber occasion, the Friday night when American citizens in Mazatlan joined in spirit with their compatriots in the United States to remember the dead and pray for their families. The hastily arranged prayer and remembrance service brought together about 150 people, Americans and a few of their Canadian and Mexican friends. It took place in a meeting room at the Hotel Playa Mazatlan. Mayor Alejandro Higuera and several high-ranking city officials came to express their condolences to the grief-stricken crowd. After prayers, reflections and moments of silence, Mayor Higuera told the gathering that he was expressing “the solidarity, respect and most profound condolences” of the people of Mazatlan “for the acts of terrible cowardice that took place in the city of New York” on Sept. 11. He ended his remarks by condemning all forms of violence and adding a hearty “God bless the United States of America.” Half a dozen U.S. citizens came forward, one at a time, to share their thoughts on the terrorist attacks and their sorrow for the victims and families. The meeting ended with the singing of “America the Beautiful.” Tourists stranded here because of canceled flights and the border closure made up more than half of the audience. Others were members of the

American colony who live in Mazatlan. It was four-year Mazatlan residents Robin and James Schofield, along with Marianne Biasatti de Fuentes of Rico’s Coffee Bar who hatched the idea of organizing a local gathering on the same day such events were to take place all over the United States. They called the office of the new American Consular Agent, Patty Fletcher at different times and Patty put the two together. Marianne in turn called the Pacific Pearl Office which, for many English Speaking people in Mazatlan, is their only source of local news and general information. Fliers were quickly printed up at the Pearl’s office and handed out by all parties throughout the whole town. Pacific Pearl Publisher Mike Veselik made a few internet connections and word got quickly around. Maricha Veselik made calls to the Hotel Playa Mazatlan to arrange everything needed for the meeting location. A special Thank You goes out to Virginia and Gene George and Don Vient George for their help in such short notice. The family donated one of the hotel’s meeting rooms, the Salon Bugambilias, along with coffee and sodas for people who cared to stay and share their thoughts after the formal program. Some of those attending also brought cookies to share.
