Hola amigos y amigas.
I am the new gringo in town. Forever I hope. Should I leave Mexico alive,
you’ll see pigs use toilet paper! So after bragging to the publisher that
I can write, (Oh Boy!), he says “Write me something”. And I said “What”.
He said “ Something local and interesting, lets see what youve got”. Okay
then - #1 Topic I love to watch American college and Pro football on TV.
Prior to moving here, I lived in Baja Norte for five years with cable
TV. During the six months of the football season I was gloriously sated
each weekend. (Yah, I’m one of them!) Here in Mazatlan? Where to goes
and who cares? I found quickly who cares. After picking up a copy of this
publication at my local store, I found the ad for “The Biggest Little
Bar In Town”, “The Sports Saloon”. Located in the center of the Golden
Zone, off Av. Sabalo, behind Farmacia Moderna and Banamex. Open everyday
11am-11pm, Happy hour 4 to 6. And....Monday Night Football! I’m home!
My first Sunday last month proved to me these folks are serious about
the NFL. All the games, tasty snacks and food, and anything that you wish
to drink.. The kitchen is now open and serving all of your favorite American
snacks. There is a large menu of Mexican-American specialities, with hopes
for a Thanksgiving bash with all the trimmings. (I’m not sure what I can
get away with here, but if allowed, I promise to “skid” better next month.)
(Oops, by the way what ever happened to Pia Zadora?) On a serious note
for a few moments, I didn’t come here because of the September 11th tragedy.
This move was planned many months ago. As yours are, my mind and heart
are filled with feelings for all in the world who have been affected by
this terrible event altering all

of our lives forever.
Until terrorism is abolished as a tool by fools, creating a fear we’ve
not known in sixty years, we must trust our government(s) to do the right
things. Hopefully they will never politic with fanatics again. I know-lighten
up! Okay, maybe this will be useful to someone you know about up North
and flying here is not an option now. I’ve told everyone who’ve asked
me in the US (and many who didn’t) that cross country bus travel in Mexico
is economical, easy, safe, and professional. Nothing like that Monopoly
Greyhound. Think of the luxury tour buses you’ve seen in the States. Here
there is real competition and luxury! Air conditioned, contoured and assigned
seating.(want a window seat? Ask for it when buying your ticket, and it’s
yours for the trip) TV’s, videos, toilet, and window curtains. Suggestions?
Glad you asked. From San Diego,CA., take the Greyhound (Ugh!) across the
border to Tijuana main station. Luxury lines in order are “Elite”, “Tap”,
“Pacifico” to the Interior. From Tucson, AZ, (Maybe Phoenix also) the
“Crucero” line to all points South. From El Paso, TX., “Americanos” line
directly South. Now, these buses do make 10 to 20 minute stops along the
way, But...a couple of tips. Take aboard your favorite handy snack foods,
chips, donuts, puddings, cookies, or mom’s meatloaf sandwiches, whatever.
And if it’s going to be an overnight ride, carry on a small blanket, shawl
or jacket (cause the a/c does get cold-cold). Maybe a small pillow will
give you extra comfort , too. Anyway, why would folks on vacation want
to fly over such a beautiful country as Mexico? Ay, caramba! Relax and
enjoy the ride! Quote of the month: “If you think education is expensive....try
ignorance!”
