Itīs going into overtime, Oakland and Minnesota are tied at the Super
Bowl in Tampa Bay, Florida, the fans are screaming, the country glued
to its telivision. Who will come out on top? The battle rages on as the
teams fight between the 30-yard markers. Replacements are shuttled back
and forth. Even some trick plays are called, flea flickers and double
reverses, only to be stopped. Fans are canvessed and the spread narrows
as the betting begins to deminish. Double and triple overtime are played.
John Gruden, the Raiders Coach, suggests reviewing the tapes to determine
the winner by total yards. The game is halted but the tapes have been
mishandled and have been spindled and mutulated. Dennis Greene, the Vikings
Coach, suggests counting the dimples on the helmets to determine the winner.
Attorneys are brought out and appeals are sent to the head ref., also
from Florida, he doesnīt know what to count. A play is reviewed to determine
the intent of the free safety, was the intent to prevent the reception
or to intercept? The umpires had a

conference, penalties
were called on both players and the down is to be replayed! Another conference
is called, did the Oakland quarterback, Gannon, intentionally ground the
ball outside ior inside of the tackles? Or should the rules be changed?
If so do we start the game over or resume the play from 18 minutes into
quaduple overtime? A Minnesota assistant coach appeals a defensive penalty,
the flag gets picked up. This is appealed by the opposing coach only to
be determined that it could not be reviewed. Al Davis brings out more attorneys,
Minnesota, their Viking mascote- strength verses deceit. The players are
exhausted. The NFL Commisioner, the supreme law of football, Paul Tagliabue,
leans towards total yards but has the side judge mismarked the placement
of the ball? Finally, in the longest game ever played it was determined
that the absentee fans would decide the victor but when the players, coaches,
and attorneys, owners and umpires looked around, they noticed the fans had
left. They were watching the college basketball Final Four. |
