A HOBIE CAT RACE IN MAZATLAN
By Shana Hugh
On Sunday, November 28, twelve hobie cat owners mounted their boats (or hobie cats) for a "Beach Boys Hobie Cat Race." The race-- a figure eight around the three islands off of Playa Gaviotas in the Golden Zone-- was open to the hobie cat owners who rent their boats out along the beach. The success of the event is largely due to the generous donors that sponsored the race. Although not recognized during the event, a handful of contributors made the race possible. Aside from Pacifico, the following donors provided the prizes and trophies: Tom Preston and Diane Crosetto from Leavenworth, Washington, donated a trophy and $100 USD; Cynthia Stoner of Phoenix, Arizona, donated $100 USD; Maxine Banfield and Walt Elsner from Tacoma, Washington, donated $50USD; the Pacific Pearl donated $50 USD, and the Sports Saloon donated $25 USD. Thanks to these giving sponsors, the top three competitors received a first prize of a trophy and $150 USD, a second prize of $100 USD, and a third prize of $75 USD. In addition, everyone else who finished the race (excluding the first, second and third place winners) were entered in a draw for a consolation prize: a keg of beer. Congratulations to the winners. With a winning time of one hour, eight minutes, Oscar Ramon Padilla and Carlos Castillo won the race. In second place was Juan de Dios Tiznado and Gonzalo Magallanes. Third place was awarded to Juan Pablo Rodriguez and his wife. While the hobie cat competition transpired among the waves, arm wrestling competitions took place on the beach between spectators. Both competitors and spectators alike had a lot of fun during this unique event.
