GET LUCKY... TRY SPORTFISHING
By Jeanette McElroy
It was a big day on dock 10 at Marina Mazatlán as the charter fleet started to roll in about 2 o'clock. Mary days they come and go with little or no fanfare, but today you could feel the excitement and see the happy fishermen even before the boats had tied up. The happy chatter in English and Spanish was all about the 6 big sailfish and tournament sized marlin that had been caught on this typical day May. Mazatlán is one of the world's best sport fishing locations for both big game and samll game fishing. Most popular are the blue water excursions, the deep sea fishing for sail fish, sword fish, dorado(mahi-mahi), tuna, bonita, and the trophy-size blue, black and striped marlin. They also cast and troll with lighter tackle for bottom fish. These include the great eating fish such as red sanpper, sea bass, yellow tail, skipjack, and grouper; also fish with fun sounding names like trigger, snook, rooster, sierra, pampano, and corvina. The type of fishing you choose determines what kind of boat you use and the price for a day's run. There are many ways to participate in this high adventure, and Marina Mazatlán is the home to just two of the many charter fleets. With their sate of the art boats and experienced capitains and crews, they have many days of buena suerte (good luck) and basically all their guests need to do is let these guys do what they do best. Both the Escualo Fleet and Vikingo's Fleet offer super deluxe pangas, fully equipped for comfort and safety. This open boat style of fishing is for the hard-core sportsman because it puts you rigth in the middle of the action, in constant communication with your captain and in a position to set your own hook annd fight your own fish. In addition to the safety features like dual outboards, VHF radios, and all the equipment required to meet US Coast Guard standards, they feature comforts like bimini tops and private bathrooms for the more delicate fisherpersons. The fishing savvy of the captain is enhanced by the best modern technology such as a compass, GPS and fish finder. The Esacualo Fleer also has three 34' crusiers that travel at about 25 knots, compared to the faster 30 knot pangas. These accommodations with the twin diesels and flying bridge may be more in keeping with what some fishermen are accustomed to. Most morning about 6 o'clock the visitors of all ages board and with the friendly enthusiastic crew, head out to see what their fortune holds. It promises to be a carefree day for the guest from the minute their hosts pick them up and deliver them to the dock; all the bait, tackle, ice and sodas are included, plus they will clean your catch! Although many of the fish are released (about 50%), many opt to keep their catch and ship it home for eating, maybe having it custom smoked first; it is also possible to arrage to have a marine taxidermist mount you trophy. In this case, the capitain of the fleet delivers the meat to the orphanage. Whether you are and old salt or a first-timer, there is on better way to experience the beauty of Mazatlán rich sea life then to put to sea in a small boat. Add to this the thrill of the hunt and the up close personal look at nature's bounty, and you will have a vacation adventure to remember. And yes, you can even get the T-shirt!
