BASEBALL SEASON STARTS
By LaVina Fonseca
Boy! It's hard to believe it's time for the "Winter Baseball Season" to begin again here in Mazatlán already!! The first game to be played is on Thursday, October 14, 1999 at the Teodoro Mariscal Stadium. Any pulmania or taxi driver will be able to take you there. At the time of this writing it has not been decided for sure what time the festivities start. So check with the hotel you're staying in or call the baseball office at 81-17-10 or fax 81-17-11 or email club@venados.com.mx The "OPENING DAY" will have so many special things going on that won't happen at everyother game thereafter, so it's a must to come out and join us for the experience of a lifetime! You won't regret it one little bit. The Mexican people really go all out in anything they do. They take a simple, ordinary, everyday, run-of-the-mill baseball game and make a "SPECIAL EVENT", "FIESTA", "CELEBRATION" of it and somehow win your heart forever in the process. Many American AAA Baseball Players will be coming to participate in the winter ball for the Pacific Coast League. It is quite an experience for them and their families to come down for the season to play ball. For the past two season we have had many of the same players return and some new ones added. At this time we're not sure who for sure is coming but you can be sure we'll greet them with open arms and make them feel right at home. That's where you come in......to come out and rout them on, letting them know you appreciate their talent and skills. For many of them it's the first time they've ever been out of the United States and/or away from their families. But it's worth it! The Mexican people (men, women and children alike)love to see and talk (practice English with them)the American players. And of course all of the regular Mexican players that have played all over México for the summer season with different teams return to Mazatlán in August and September to join the "Venados". They bring their families a little early so as to get their wives settled in and their children registered in school for the year. These marvelous people are hard working, energetic, sensitive, sincere, eager to please and very aggressive in the game of baseball. Once you come to a baseball game in Mazatlán believe me you'll return. It's probably the most exciting ballgame you'll ever experience. They have every kind of food in the world to eat........there's tacos, burritos, sopas, tortas, hot dogs, sausages w/barbecue sauce or hot sauce, palomitas (known to us as popcorn), peanuts (they call cacahuetes), every kind of cold sodas, hot chocolate and least we forget the "MUY FRIA PACIFICO CERVEZA" for those of us with a zest for life........... You know who you are!Ha!Ha! Heck the girls will even come down in the stands and take orders for food and bring it back for you.......Such a DEAL! They also have a booth to buy balls, bats, caps, T-shirts, jackets, sweat shirts and you name it with the Venados emblem on it for gifts to take back home or if you live here like us to wear to all of the games! Of course dear friends.......one of the main attractions is "PELY" the Pelican Mascot for the Venados......He is a must see! You can not believe how talented this young man is. He will dress up in different outfits from a doctor to a Mexican singer to Michael Jackson to a man dancing with a women and entertain his little heart out for you. He goes all over the stands to see the children (who by the way love him to pieces)and play with them autographing their balls and bats (plastic) as keepsakes. Of course if you think I sound a little predujice, it's because he gives me a hug through the netting every night so of course he makes me feel special as he also will all of you. Now after reading this article you haven't gotten inspired to partake of this kind of a fun family evening at the the ballgame.......I think there's something wrong with your blood pressure medicine and you'd better see your doctor right away. We'll be sitting in Palco (box seats) number 27 in the front row next to the Venados.....probably talking to all of the players.....so come on down and "Shake Howdy" with us. We'll share all we know about what's happening for the season that we have been priviledged to find out. The tickets for General Admission are $35 pesos and $45 pesos for the General Numbered tickets. That's pretty cheap intertainment and it's the best goode ole American/Mexican fun you'll ever have. Come on out say Hola, Howdy and How are ya! whether you're a first time visitor or live here full time, we'll see you there at "The Old Ballgame"!!!!
