The Winter Season of Baseball got it’s 1999/2000 start at the “Teodoro Mariscal
Stadium” on October 14th..What a time we all had! There were plenty of fireworks
filling the skies over the stadium, miniature hot air balloons with a hint
of oriental design intermittently floating in the moonlight above turning
every head. The pom pom girls were there in full color as well as the acrobatic,
pyramid team doing what they all do best and entertaining the crowd to the
fullest extent. Not to be outdone of course our mascot “Pely” was there
in full regalia pleasing the fans in his usual way. In receiving my usual
big hug routinely through the net from Pely it made my night as always.
At a later time “Pely Copperfield” was introduced doing a very fine new
disappearing trick….by far one of his best. We all hope this was not only
for opening night and that we’ll be able to enjoy it at another game later
on. As is normal our first and very important opening night game is played
with our arch rivals “The Culiacan Tomateros” they rightfully being introduced
first……and then “Our Mazatlán Vena–dos” were introduced and brought out
one at a time with a little league player on either hand. These “niños”
(little boys) were running as fast as their little legs could take them
(mostly in triple time) all the while gazing up in awe of their idols. They
were so proud to be included in being a part of “The Big Guys” stuff! Neither
awesome, precious nor any other word that I can think of can possibly even
begin to describe that moment! I’m sure each and everyone of you can relate
to this scene and get misty eyed just at the thought of some of your past
memories in one way or another. As custom would have it our fine Mayor,
Team Owner, General Manager, Team Manager and Coaches were introduced. All
of Mazatlán’s finest and everyone that is someone was |

there to start off
the new season with a big bang! If you were one of the fantastic crowd,
you know “wherefore I speakith”, if not we hope you make it this month
with bells on.At
this writing we have five new young American players from the minor leagues
in the states that burst onto the scene with more fire, vim and vigor
than any entire baseball team could muster up and ready to do their everlovin’
best for the “Venados” this winter…….Kevin Grijak of the L.A.Dodgers,
Will Ohman & Eric Hinske from the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves
sending Brad Tyler & Steve Sisco! These five will be joining our regular
energetic, vivacious, hard playing Mexican players to give you the best
entertainment ever! It behooves all of you to attend at least one of 10
games that will be played in Mazatlán in November. Look for the schedule
in this paper for the dates and times of the game. You’ll have the time
of your life whether you’re here on vacation or spending 6 months or living
here full time. Plan an exciting night with us…….we’ll be in Palco (box
seats) #27…A & B. Ron and I would love to meet & greet each and every
one of you. All the food and drink you can imagine is in the stadium from
Peanuts to Popcorn to Tacos, Burritos and Hot Dogs, Sopas, Salchichos
with barbecue & hot sauces. To drink your choices are from coffee, hot
chocolate and sodas to a “muy fria (very cold) Pacifico or Modelo beer”.
Also fresh fruit cups are available. If you go away hungry or thirsty
it’s your fault. After the game be sure and stop by for a nightcap at
“The Sports Saloon” behind Brigatinos and next to Rin Rin Pizza side street
by Dairy Queen. There you’ll meet other vacationers or residents that
are also sports enthusiasts as yourselves for some good conversation……maybe
even see a baseball player or two! We’ll see you there!
