They came from the Upper Penninsula of Michigan, or "UP" (therefore known
as the UP-ers, pronouced "yoopers"). Residents from Ironwood, Iron Mountain,
Kingford, Norway and even those form Hurley, Wisconsin, joined the festivities
at Señor Frogs on the evening of April 6. Guzzling beer after beer and plenty
of margaritas, it was an informal gathering of about a hundred Yoopers.
And boy, was it a party. Most of the Yoopers at Señor Frogs were vacationing
in Mazatlán, the majority staying at the Costa d'Oro or Royal Villas hotels.
But the "reunion" was purely coincidental. When the Yoopers boarded the
plane bound for Mazatlán, they had no idea that they were travelling in
such numbers. Was there a big airline special from upper Michigan? Or was
there some sort of magnetic draw to Mazatlán? According to one participant,
|
|
the force that brought them together remains a mystery: "I still don't understand
how we all got together," he exclaimed. Whatever the draw, the reunion was
a success. One Yooper expressed his enthusiasm for the warm weather: "I'm
glad that I didn't need my swampers!" Mike Veselik, owner of the Pacific
Pearl, is originally from Upper Michigan, and was therefore in the midst
of things at the "Yooper convention." His thoughts on the gathering: "It
must have been deer camp revenge, 'cuz the wife and kids were here also."
Amidst beer, margaritas, beer, shooters and beer, the Yoopers partied and
reminisced until the wee hours of the morning. The party couldn't have been
more of a success-- unless, of course, Señor Frogs had served Cudighi and
hired the band, "Da Yoopers." |
