Last year was Mazatlán's
First Annual Sand Sculpture Contest, and thanks to sponsors such as Pacifico,
Coca-Cola, Crystal FM, and the Pacific Pearl, it was a resounding
success! Although the First Annual produced a crowd attendance of over
3000, twenty teams competing for 3000 pesos of prize money, and a ton
of fun for participants and sponsors alike, the Second Annual event--
to be held on January 22 and 23, 2000-- is expected to be even bigger
and better.
Sand Sculpture contests
are always popular, and usually grow in size and quality each year. In
Acapulco -- a well-known Mexican destination for sand sculpture contests
(which you can visit at www.acapulco.org) winners go on to compete at
the World Championship Sand Sculpture Contest in Harrison Hot Springs,
BC, Canada. This, too, is the caliber of sand sculpture contests that
Mazatlán is quickly advancing toward.
In the First Annual
Mazatlán contest, competitors were amateur locals and tourists, some of
who took advantage of free lessons from Master Sand Sculptor, Bert Adams.
For Mazatlán's Second Annual, there will once again be an Open Beach Contest,
where locals and tourists can enter and compete for prize money. And more
good news: Bert Adams will be back with free sand sculpting classes on
the beach.
Bert's Sand Sculpting
lessons are a real opportunity you probably won't find anywhere else.
Not only will

you learn to build sandcastles,
you will learn to build everything from dolphins to turtles, to cruise
ships to Buddha... Such were some of the sculptures created in last year's
contest. Amazing works of art. How could you pass up this incredible opportunity?
The pride you'll find in your creation will alone be worth the trip down.
Try something different and visit Mazatlán for the Sand Sculpture Contest.
Last year was amazing
fun. Families, individuals, couples... everyone that came had a wonderful
time. It was like a big carnival, complete with beer and other cold refreshments
and vendors selling everything from trinkets to candy. And all this excitement
on Mazatlán's beautiful Sabalo beach. Following Carnaval and the Pacifico
Marathon, this is probably developing into one of Mazatlán's biggest attractions.
If you haven't already
booked a trip to Mazatlán for the new millenium, now is the time to do
it... and be sure to include Mazatlán's Second Annual Sand Sculpture Contest
in your "must-see" (or "must-participate-in") itinerary.
