Machado — Hub of City’s Cultural Life -Guest Editorial-

For quite some time we have been wondering why the Plazuela Machado — much-touted heart of the Centro Historico — is looking so shabby.

It isn’t something you’d maybe notice at a quick glance. But every time we walk through the plazuela we notice the benches that have missing slats, making it impossible to sit on tham. All of them need a new coat of paint, too.

We are convinced that those who come to Mazatlán and help – whether they are year-round residents, “winter snowbirds”, or one weekers – must be the most compassionate people to have ever set foot on foreign soil.

And we see deep gouges in some of the paving stones, worn there by time, rainfall and just plain usage. The uneven footing can be downright dangerous to people strolling through the square, especially in the evening when women dressed up and wearing high heels are walking across the plazuela towards the theater. We can cite several instances in which people have fallen and injured themselves in the plazuela.

We love the Plazuela Machado and agree with Mazatlan’s promoters that it is truly the hub of the city’s cultural life. But as long as so much money is being spent on fancy folders and slick advertisements depicting the charm of the square, can’t a few thousand pesos be spared to spruce it up?
