Police Benefit Golf Tournament & Terry Fox Run

On Saturday, March 12th two community benefit events took place — the First Annual Police Benefit Golf Tournament and the First Annual Terry Fox Run to aid cancer research. Both were well attended, with funds being raised for the Mazatlán Police force and cancer research in Mexico. Saturday was a beautiful, sunny day in Mazatlán with a slight sea breeze and the atmosphere in both events was positively upbeat. Everyone enjoyed themselves.

What these events demonstrate is that cultures can work together toward a common goal. When the tournament and run were in the planning stage, they generated excitement and support in both the foreign and local communities. Mazatlán businesses lent their support, schools became involved, meetings were held where Spanish and English speaking representatives overcame any language or cultural barrier to organize in support of our entire community. The local press enthusiastically covered the events. Mexican, American and Canadian volunteers generously donated their time, expertise and organizational abilities. This collaborative effort resulted not only in funds for the city´s police department and cancer research, but also resulted in an appreciation for what a diverse community can accomplish — together.

A real big “Thank You” goes out to Maureen Dietrich for her dedication for two and half years as Editor for us here at the Pearl. We recognize all of her hard work and positive ideas to improve our paper and Guide & Directory. We wish you well. We will miss you….Pearl Staff
